P20 018

An object slides down a 45o slope, then along a horizontal section and then up a 45o slope.

Draw a set of 6 graphs which describe the motion of the ball.

X components against time: displacement, velocity and acceleration

Y components against time: displacement, velocity and acceleration.

Assume the ball starts from rest and ignore any frictional forces, so, the total energy of the System is conserved.

Solution

When the object reaches the end of the down-slope and hits the horizontal section of the track, impulsive forces act to reduce the vertical velocity to zero and increase the horizontal velocity so that the total energy of the system is conserved.

When the object reaches the start of the up-slope, impulsive forces act to reduce the horizontal velocity and increase the vertical velocity so that the total energy of the system is conserved.
