6     ELECTROMAGNETISM

P60 003

Two students hold a 10.0 m length of copper wire horizontally, in an East – West direction. The wire is moved vertically downwards at a speed of 0.20 m.s-1.

The horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field is 4.00x10-5 T and perpendicular to the wire.

Calculate the emf generated that would be measured by a sensitive meter placed across the ends of the wire.

Which end of the wire would be positive?

If the copper wire was then formed into a loop and moved downward as the wire, would you expect a current to flow in the wire loop? Explain your answer.
